The Joy Of Rawk

Sometimes being in a band is the greatest thing ever. Sometimes however, it sucks. It is like being married to a whole group of people who all have their own agendas and perspectives and issues. It seems to take the organisation of a military operation to get said people into a room together just to make some noise. Before too long friendships lie in tatters and egos become inflated beyond all recognition.

So, in keeping with the above sentiments, I am forming a new band. This new band is going to be nothing more than an experiment in keeping the "sucks" to a minimum and the "greats" to a maximum. To go into a room beaten by the ravages of the daily grind and leave grinning like special needs kids. A band whose chief aim is to be able to play a 20 minute set without falling about laughing. A band where there is community not competition.

And we will sound like Pavement.

Midlake - The Trials Of Van Occupanther

There are few albums that are able to transcend time and place whilst still remaining seemingly effortless in their execution. Kid A seems to manage it, Heartbreaker acheives it gracefully. Midlakes The Trials Of Van Occupanther is a work which has the listener completely disorientated in the most wonderful possible way. It is perhaps the American-ness of the album which is so romantic, or perhaps the evocation of an unspoilt country transports us to somewhere other than where we are.
Whatever the reasoning, this is a beautiful album, the likes of which British bands currently seem unable to make. Maybe a few years under George Bush's rule might shape us up. Then again, maybe not...

Long Gaps And Skyways

Firstly, an apology. I have been away for a while, having started a new job and buying my first home my dear blog has been somewhat neglected. However a new internet connection and (finally) some breathing space have alloved me to pick up where I left off. And what better way to continue than with the glorious image above taken by
Christian Gallagher.
The image successfully portrays what I consider to be one of the great British architectural acheivements of the 20th Century. Using perspective and light to convey serenity with movement is something which both the structure and image manage to balance without either adhering to traditional forms and restrictions.
